An animal is any living creature that is not rooted to the earth, that moves of its own volition, and doesn't have a soul*. One of the most popular animals is the kitten. Least popular of all animals is the mosquito, which has been responsible for killing millions of people over the centuries.

Instinct
Animals move for one of two reasons. To find food, or to find a mate. That's all. They have set of instructions pre-programmed into their DNA called instincts, and whenever they're presented with a new situation, they will choose from either the food-finding or mating instructions to respond.
Souls
Contrary to popular belief, human beings are not animals, since they have souls and their actions in life are judged by God to be either good, evil or neutral. Unlike animals, if a human being's actions are judged by God to have been evil, their souls are sent to suffer in Hell for all eternity. If they've been good, they get to go to a'Stroiya.
*Monkeys
Monkeys, though technically animals, are possessed with a feature somewhat resembling a human soul. If monkeys are bad in life, they are judged by a Monkey God and either get to play with some elk, or they get their bananas taken away from them.
